Why Drains Keep Blocking in Brisbane Northside Homes

If your drain blocks, gets cleared, and then blocks again a few months later — you're not alone. It's one of the most common plumbing complaints we hear across suburbs like Clayfield, Hamilton, Nundah, and Aspley.

Here's what's usually going on.

The Real Culprit: Tree Roots in Old Pipes

Brisbane Northside has a lot of older homes — many built in the 1950s to 1980s — and most of them still have the original clay or concrete drain pipes underground. These pipes weren't designed to last forever, and over time they develop small cracks at the joints.

That's all a tree root needs.

Roots are attracted to moisture and nutrients, and a slow drain full of wastewater is basically a buffet. They'll push through hairline cracks and grow inside the pipe, eventually creating a mat of fine roots that catches toilet paper, grease, and debris until the pipe is completely blocked.

A drain snake or jetter will clear the blockage — but if the roots aren't fully removed, or the pipe isn't repaired, they'll be back within months.

Grease Build-Up in Kitchen Drains

The other common culprit is grease. Over years of cooking, fat and oil coats the inside of kitchen drain pipes, gradually narrowing the passage. Add some food scraps and it doesn't take long to create a blockage.

The mistake most people make is pouring hot water down the sink — it moves the grease further down the pipe but doesn't remove it. High-pressure hydro-jetting is the only reliable fix.

What a CCTV Inspection Actually Tells You

When a drain keeps blocking, the most useful thing you can do is put a camera down it. A CCTV drain inspection shows:

  • Whether tree roots are present
  • If there's a section of pipe that's cracked, collapsed, or has incorrect fall
  • Where grease build-up is concentrated
  • Whether relining or replacement is needed

It takes the guesswork out completely — instead of clearing the drain and hoping for the best, you know exactly what you're dealing with.

How to Reduce the Risk

A few practical tips:

  • Don't pour cooking oil or fat down the sink. Let it cool and dispose of it in the bin.
  • Use a drain strainer in the kitchen and bathroom to catch hair and food scraps.
  • Be aware of your trees. Large trees close to the house — especially fig trees, poplars, or willows — are notorious for root intrusion.
  • Annual drain maintenance is worth it if you've had recurring problems. A yearly jetter clean keeps roots and grease from building up.

When to Call a Plumber

If your drain is blocking more than once a year, or you're noticing slow drainage, gurgling sounds from pipes, or sewage smells — don't wait. These are signs the problem is getting worse.
